Light Therapy Shows Potential

— Bright light exposure can suppress appetite and reduce weight gain by activating a visual pathway that connects directly to the lateral hypothalamus—the brain region involved in hunger and energy balance.

This pathway links what we see to how the brain regulates hunger and metabolism, helping explain why adequate daytime light exposure may support healthier energy balance and weight regulation.

In contrast, insufficient daylight or excessive artificial light at night may disrupt these signals, potentially contributing to overeating and metabolic imbalance. These findings add to growing evidence that light is not just for vision or circadian rhythm—but also plays a direct role in whole-body metabolic health.
