A large study of 87,577 adults found that greater exposure to bright daytime light was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing dementia over an average follow-up of 8.1 years. The research, published in General Psychiatry, suggests that spending more time in natural daylight may be a simple, low-cost way to support long-term brain health.

Key findings:
- Less than 0.7 hours (42 minutes) of bright daylight per day was a stronger predictor of dementia than six established risk factors, including obesity, alcohol use, hearing loss, air pollution, traumatic brain injury, and vitamin D supplement use.
- Exposure to daytime light above 1,000 lux (about the brightness of an overcast day outdoors) was associated with a 16% lower risk of dementia.
- Spending more than 0.7 hours per day in bright light of at least 5,000 lux was linked to an even greater reduction in risk.

The protective effect was strongest in people who:
- were exposed to higher levels of light at night,
- had an evening (“night owl”) chronotype, or
- carried the APOE ε4 genetic risk variant.
In these higher-risk groups, dementia risk was reduced by up to 41%.
Researchers believe the benefit may result from stronger circadian rhythms, as healthy cycles of bright days and dark nights help regulate sleep, brain function, and cognition. Improvements in circadian rhythms and brain structure appeared to explain up to one-third of the observed protective effect.
Interestingly, nighttime light exposure alone was not significantly associated with dementia risk in this study.
The researchers suggest practical ways to increase daytime light exposure, including:
- Spending more time outdoors during the day.
- Increasing access to natural daylight indoors.
- Improving workplace and home lighting to provide brighter daytime illumination.
Overall, the findings support the idea that regular exposure to bright daytime light—especially natural daylight—may be an effective, inexpensive strategy to help reduce dementia risk, particularly in people who are already at higher risk.
